Hydrogen as a fuel has been around for a long time. Although a colourless gas, hydrogen is discussed in a myriad of colours – black, brown, grey, yellow, blue, turquoise and green. Of late there has been a surge of interest in green hydrogen projects. Green hydrogen is hydrogen generated from renewable energy. It is regarded as the fuel which can reduce energy transition gaps in sectors which cannot be easily electrified, and this includes the hard to abate and energy-intensive industry sectors. According to BNEF, the global installed electrolyzers could reach 3,000GW by 2050 with a caveat that such growth will require intervention policies and scale. To this end, governments are coming up with their national hydrogen strategy as part of their energy transition plan to decarbonize their energy sector.
